Star of the West Milling Co. Expands Corn Milling

Quincy, Michigan - Star of the West Milling Co. is moving forward with a major investment in Michigan by announcing plans to build a new corn milling facility in Quincy.

The project will be developed at the site of the company’s former wheat flour mill, which recently ended operations after production capacity was expanded at the company’s facility in Ligonier, Indiana.

The new corn mill is designed to take advantage of the location’s strong grain storage capabilities and growing demand for food-grade corn ingredients.

Once completed, the facility will be able to process more than 21,000 bushels of corn per day.

Construction plans include removing the existing mill structure and warehouse and replacing them with a six-story slipform building that will house the new milling operation.

Additional features will include feed storage, truck and rail loading systems, and tote-filling capabilities to support efficient product distribution.

“The Quincy, Mich., project is an intentional step forward in meeting our strategic objective of partnering with producers and food processors with the goal of feeding the world,” said Jim Howe, chief executive officer of Star of the West. “Our business model will continue to focus on diversity and vertical integration within the ag sector.”

Company leaders believe the project creates new opportunities to serve both current and future customers.

Many existing customers already purchase corn-based ingredients, making the expansion a natural fit for the business.

“Many of our current wheat-based customer base are already purchasing corn-based ingredients for other product lines,” said Mike Fassezke, president of the flour milling division.

Karina Spencer, Executive Vice President of the flour milling division, noted that the location offers important transportation advantages for customers throughout Michigan and the northeastern United States.

She added that the facility will use advanced technology to support food safety, product quality, and operational efficiency.

The project is expected to be completed in 2028 and involves several contractors and equipment suppliers from across the United States and internationally.

Founded in 1870, Star of the West is a diversified agribusiness with operations in multiple states.

The company remains active in flour milling, grain handling, dry bean processing, agronomy services, and organic grain production while continuing to invest in future growth opportunities.
