Visual content is processed 60,000 times faster than text! To increase your bakery’s click-rate and generate leads, gorgeous cake photography is an asset on websites and social media.

You don’t need to be a professional photographer.  With the cameras on today’s phones and a few key props, you can take photos that pop!  Here are four ways to take cake photography that will help increase customers and increase sales:

1.  Lighting is the key to success for your photo shoot:

Natural or artificial light? Between the two, natural light is best for shooting cakes and food in general.

Natural light can be used in two ways: direct light or diffused light. Direct light provides high contrast whereas diffused light is low contrast with little to no shadows. Choose which one to use based on the colors of the cake you are photographing.

2. Use props, while keeping the cake the attention piece

Consider scale and size in your prop usage, regular-sized plates can look huge to the camera. An image should tell a story therefore the props should add to the storyline.  Aim to have cohesion and understand why you are using props - to be creative! The props should fit into the design elements too. For example, if an ingredient is used in the recipe consider showcasing it in the background as a prop.

3. Style your cake

While lighting and props can enhance an image, consider styling your cake to make your creations look delicious.

Some food styling examples are:

  • Add some extra color or texture: berries on top for added elements
  • Remember the seasons as you are taking your photos, ensure they are part of the styling
  • The linens, plates, backdrop wall color all need to be considered as part of the style of the photo

As you know, the before and after process from ingredient mixing to finished cake looks very different. Consider how your cake will look after the baking process, here are some tips:

  • Weigh out the batter for layers or use a measuring cup for even-layers
  • Cool the cakes after baking
  • Trim the cake layers
  • Apply frosting to the top of the cake then work your way down the side

In summary, to nail that cake shoot consider lighting, prop use, and cake styling. Cake photography is sure to help draw attention online and make consumers wish they were taking a bite of your yummy cakes!
