Hillshire to invest in Sare Lee Bakery

January 25, 2016

The Hillshire Brands Co., a subsidiary of Tyson Foods, Inc., plans on investing more than $25 million to improve one of its baking facilities. The Tarboro, NC facility that makes products under the Sara Lee brand is getting a facelift to meet growing demand for its products as well as maximize efficiencies.

The investment will allow the bakery to produce more baked goods, including the biscuits, cakes, and muffins it currently produces, as well as add lines to produce gluten-free products.

“We’re glad to invest in our Tarboro plant, which will mean more jobs for the city,” said Wes Morris, president of prepared foods for Tyson Foods. “The existing infrastructure, location and availability of a qualified workforce make the plant ideal for this expansion project.”

The company qualified for a grant from the One North Carolina Fund, Edgecombe County and Tarboro to help with the expansion. The One North Carolina Fund provides financial assistance to companies through local governments to attract business projects, stimulate local economy and create new jobs in the state. Hillshire won’t receive any money upfront and must meet specific targets to obtain the funds.

The Tarboro plant has been in operation since 2000 and employs close to 700 people. It’s expected that the expansion will create close to 100 job opportunities over the next three years.
