Industry Professionals Gather in Toronto for Bakery Showcase 2016

  • 4 May 2016

Industry professionals from North America gathered at the Bakery Showcase over the weekend for Canada’s national baking specific event that won’t return until 2018. The event was hosted by the Baking Association of Canada and ran from May 1st - May 3rd at the International Center in Mississauga, Ontario.

Throughout the three day exhibition were educational sessions, conferences, panel discussions and exhibits. The exhibits included baking ingredients, equipment, services, technology and baked goods from North American companies.

Each day began with conference sessions covering various topics by professionals in the food industry. Some of the session highlights included two panel discussions with industry influencers on “Where Are We and Where Are We Going: The Bakers Perspectives,” as well as “State Of The Industry: Responding To Consumers and Governments Regarding Today’s Food and Nutrition Challenges.”

In the latter of the panels, industry experts from Grains Foods Foundation, Healthy Grains Foundation, American Bakers Association, and Baking Association of Canada discussed the challenges the industry has communicating its messages to consumers when it has to compete with activists and so-called experts who don’t have the education and training to back them up. What can be done? The panelists suggest the industry needs to restore its credibility through steady repetition of key messages, clear communication and strategy, as many consumers have lost faith in manufacturers and government officials.

The trade show started after the conferences at 12 p.m. and ran until 5 p.m. from Sunday to Tuesday.

The variety of equipment at the show was impressive – whether you were looking for decorating equipment and supplies to mixing equipment, baking and cooking equipment to packing solutions, it was all there in one room – with multiple demonstrations and experts on hand to answer any questions.

This year, a Knowledge Centre was added to the show – to support the industry’s efforts in delivering innovative and nutritious products to consumers. Sponsored by Ardent Mills, the Knowledge Centre quizzed professionals on their knowledge of ingredients, formulations and more, as well as provided education on different types of wheat and flour and their variety of applications in baking.

As Canada’s only baking industry B2B trade show and conference in the country, the Bakery Showcase was a great experience full of learning, networking, and the best part – sampling!
