Big Top Cake Competition Hits the Happy Hour with Frosting and Sprinkles

John E. Korener & Co., Inc in association with Delgado University the Southern Food & Beverage Museum hosted their 2nd Annual New Orleans Big Top Cake Competition and Bakery Carnival on June 24, 2017. The competition included professionals, home bakers and students to impress a panel of professional judges and the public with the most fantastic cake decorating techniques. This year the theme was “It’s Happy Hour Somewhere!”.

 

The winner of the competition in both categories will have the opportunity to display their cakes at the museum for a year following the competition. The student category will additionally have the chance to enroll themselves in a three-day Pastry Live in Atlanta. The competition also included a variety of desserts, baked goods and candies.

The winners awarded for Cake Decoration in Professional/Adult category were:

  • 1st Place: Becky Rodriguez.
  • 2nd Place: Melissa Daniel of Rouses Markets.
  • 3rd Place: Patti Kallinikos of IP Casino Resort and Spa.
  • People's Choice: Becky Rodriguez.

The winners awarded for Cake Decoration in Student category were:

  • 1st Place: Cindy Hutto from Delgado Community College.
  • 2nd Place: Miranda Boyd from Louisiana Culinary Institute.
  • 3rd Place: Bricen Lawson from Delgado Community College.
  • People's Choice: Cindy Hutto from Delgado Community College.

The carnival participants had the opportunity to serve samples of sweet treats to attendees. The attendees then had to select their favorite bakery and vote for them. Each person who attended the event were given two tickets, one for choosing their favorite Bakery Carnival treat and the other for Big Top Cake Competition.

The winners awarded for Bakery Carnival Category were:

  • 1st Place: Dwynesha Lavigne from Deelightful Cupcakes, LLC.
  • 2nd Place: Christina Nicosia from Louisiana Culinary Institute.
  • 3rd Place: Jon Petrie from Delgado Community College.
  • People's Choice: Sarah Serdynski from Island View Casino.
