Bakery in Chicago Stands Out for Community Involvement

The Edgewater community of Chicago, is home to a new family-operated bakery. Edge of Sweetness Bakery under the guidance of Kate Merrill and Paige Tyler, who were previously associated with Kate’s Cookies and Homemade Sin Bakery.

Edge of Sweetness Bakery stands apart from other bakeries in the area by having the community actively involved. The bakery’s sidewalk cafĂ© architecture was designed by community volunteers. All their bookkeeping is also volunteered time. It also features a “take one, leave one” community book house contributed to by Edgewater residents.

The venture has grown into a place where people feel at home. The architecture consists of light woodwork and a white tile backdrop behind the counter giving it a home kitchen feel. Constant neighborhood participation is what sets it apart from other nearby bakeries.

An exclusive service that Edge of Sweetness Bakery offers is the rental of its kitchen space to start-up businesses for a fixed-monthly fee.

In addition, the bakery also serves a variety of cookies, breads, muffins, dessert bars and fudge. The most popular item is the buttery cake-crust bottom topped with chocolate and coconut known as Ooey Gooey Butter Cake.
